Description

Established in 1946, Tactical Air Command became a major component of US Air Force operations, alongside Strategic Air Command and Air Défense Command.

Headquartered in Langley, Virginia, it was responsible for conducting air operations outside of the continental United States.

During the Korean War, it flew close air support, battlefield interdiction, tactical reconnaissance and airlift support missions, most in support of the US Army.

As the Cold War progressed, Tactical Air Command’s role, responsibilities, and structure constantly adapted to changing military demands and rapid technological advances, while it was also engaged in regional conflicts that threatened to challenge stability.

During its existence, Tactical Air Command operated aircraft across fighter, ground attack, tactical reconnaissance, air refueling, special operations, and nuclear strike roles.

Included in this book is an analysis and overview of the Command, its evolution and development, as well as a detailed review of the role it played in the Berlin Airlift, Southeast Asia, and the Gulf War.
