Description

Volume 1 of the RAF Heraldry series covers No.1 to No.100 Squadrons. Each Squadron entry includes the Trust’s colour artwork of the Badge, plus the details of its award, the basis of the Blazon (device) and Motto, plus Squadron Standard and Battle Honour details. In addition each entry includes a short history of the Squadron plus one or more images showing squadron aircraft with Badge elements displayed.
Other chapters include the origins and decisions on Badges – why, for example, do some squadrons NOT have a badge? One section includes a discussion on squadron colours, whilst others look at various aspects of RAF heraldry. All Battle Honours for the RAF are listed in an annex.
“The Inspector or Royal Air Force Badges in reply stated, “It has been decided, generally speaking, that with few exceptions numerals are not to be introduced into Royal Air Force Badges.” Information was also received through Headquarters, Royal Air Force, Middle East, indicating that the Air Ministry was in agreement with the above decision. A protest against this decision was immediately communicated to of Royal Air Force Badges. It is with great regret that the present Commanding Officer and all members of the Squadron have to record this change in the original badge. In redesigning the badge an attempt has been made to evolve something which will resemble the old Badge as closely as possible.” The discussion around the Badge for No.6 Squadron was recorded in the Squadron ORB with some vehemence; the Badge was clearly of great importance! Other squadrons make no mention of their Badge.
